National Transportation Safety Board officials are investigating the cause of a fiery plane crash that killed the two people and two dogs aboard near Kremmling last night, authorities say.

Investigators are trying to confirm the identity of the two victims who were badly burned in the crash at 8:25 p.m. at the Grand Valley Ranch, according to a news release by Grand County Sheriff Rod Johnson.

The small twin-engine plane was on its final approach to McElroy Airfield when it crashed, said Mike Fergus, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. He said it has not been determined what caused the crash.

The plane burst into flames on impact 2 miles west of the airport, authorities said.

Flames consumed the wreckage, according to Johnson.

The plane took off from a Las Vegas, Nev., airport, Fergus said.

He said the 1982 PA-60 Piper Aerostar was owned by BDW Equipment Leasing out of Las Vegas.

The Grand County coroner’s office responded. The NTSB is the primary investigative agency looking into the cause of the crash.
