ATLANTA — Braves third baseman Chipper Jones sat out against the New York Mets on Saturday night because of tendinitis in his right shoulder.
Jones, who is trying to win his first batting title, went 0-for-3 on Friday during Atlanta’s 9-5 loss to the Mets and was forced out of the game early by the injury. His average fell to .362, nine points better than St. Louis’ Albert Pujols for best in the majors.
“I can’t really throw, as you saw last night,” Jones said Saturday.
Dodgers activate Kent
LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers activated Jeff Kent from the 15-day disabled list — less than three weeks after the 40-year-old second baseman underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee.
Kidney stone sidelines Angels pitcher Saunders
ARLINGTON, Texas — Joe Saunders, Anaheim’s 16-game winner, was hospitalized late Friday with a kidney stone.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Saunders was expected to pass the stone Saturday. The left-hander is still scheduled to start Tuesday at Seattle.
Jeter gets hit on hand
NEW YORK — Derek Jeter left after getting hit on the hand by a pitch in the ninth inning of Saturday’s game against the Orioles.
X-rays were negative, and he said he’ll play in the ballpark’s farewell game tonight. The Associated Press
