LOVELAND — Two Berthoud teenagers who lost their legs in a sport utility vehicle accident have settled their lawsuit against Isuzu Motors America, which made the SUV they were driving.
Tyler Carron, Nikko Landeros and their families sued Isuzu in October. The case was closed this month.
An Isuzu Motors America spokesman did not disclose terms. The families have declined to comment.
Carron and Landeros were 17 when they stopped along Larimer County Road 17 to fix a flat tire on Carron’s 1999 Isuzu Trooper on the way home from a dance Jan. 15, 2007.
While they were behind the car, a vehicle driven by Michelle Berra slammed into the back of the Isuzu, hitting the boys. The teens’ legs were amputated. Berra pleaded guilty to careless driving resulting in injury and received a year’s probation.
The lawsuit against Isuzu alleged the design of the SUV’s rear hatch doors contributed to the accident because they swung open, making it difficult for someone behind the vehicle to see its rear lights.
