BERLIN — A court on Saturday ordered that two ethnic Somalis suspected of planning a terrorist attack be held in custody, a day after they were arrested on board an airplane at a German airport, prosecutors said.
The two men face possible charges of conspiring to commit a crime, said Friedrich Apostel, a spokesman for prosecutors in Bonn.
The suspects — a 23-year- old Somali and a 24-year-old German born in Somalia — were pulled off a KLM flight at Cologne-Bonn airport as the plane prepared to depart for Amsterdam on Friday morning.
Authorities said suicide notes were found in which the suspects allegedly proclaimed their desire to fight in a holy war and die in a terrorist attack, but it did not appear they planned to hijack a plane.
