MINNEAPOLIS—Xcel Energy wants to build two new substations in south Minneapolis to meet the area’s growing need for electricity.

The two substations would be connected by a pair of high-voltage lines. It would be the first new transmission corridor in the city in more than 20 years.

Minneapolis-based Xcel plans meetings to get input on exactly where the substations should be located. Construction would begin about a year from now, with service delivery by summer 2010.
