POINDEXTER APPEAL
OMAHA—A former Black Panther who has argued he wasn’t given a fair trial when he was convicted in the 1971 bombing death of an Omaha police officer is headed back to the state’s highest court. Arguing his right to a fair trial was violated and that his appellate lawyers were ineffective, Edward Poindexter is hoping the court will re-examine the issues and overturn a Douglas County judge’s 2007 decision. TRAIN COLLISION-LAWSUIT
LOS ANGELES—The brakeman on the freight train involved in a deadly collision with a commuter train filed a lawsuit Friday against the commuter railroad and the companies that provide its engineers. The lawsuit blames the defendants for not properly screening, supervising and training the Metrolink engineer who ran a red signal and collided with a freight train operated by Omaha, Neb., based Union Pacific.
