The “Denver sound” — i.e. dark, Gothic country-punk that emphasizes our region’s dusty, violent and varied past as an American frontier — has been diversified in the last few years as indie rock, chamber pop, folk and other genres squeeze into more clubs next to Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Munly and Lee Lewis Harlots, Wovenhand, 16 Horsepower and other standard-bearer acts. Still, the “Denver sound” was alive and well at the on Sept. 19.

The spiky, noisy blues-punk of , the moody western dirges of East Coast refugees , the grandiose, ominous songs of and the inimitable, face-melting retro-party rock of were all represented that evening. Reverb photographer Jason Claypool stopped by for the following essay. –John Wenzel
