ARVADA, Colo.—A teenager will avoid jail time after being accused of running over a bird with his car.

Dustin McNutt’s guilty plea to one count of cruelty to animals means he will pay $80 in court costs and complete 60 hours community service. The offense will be wiped from his record if he doesn’t have any run ins with the law in the next year.

McNutt got in trouble after a woman who says she witnessed the incident claimed he intentionally swerved his car to strike the bird—a crow or a raven—near a gutter.

McNutt says it was an accident. He was visiting a friend to play video games when it happened.
