COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Colorado Department of Corrections has decided to keep its headquarters in Colorado Springs despite $1.5 million worth of incentives offered by Pueblo to move.
The state agency is building a new central office and told officials in El Paso, Pueblo, Fremont and Douglas counties that it wanted the kind of incentives private agencies and companies get to relocate. State Rep. Mike Merrifield, D-Colorado Springs, was among those who criticized the overture, saying one taxpayer-funded entity shouldn’t be pumping others for more tax money.
The Department of Corrections will build a new 100,000-square-foot headquarters near its current site and will enter into a 30-year lease-to-own agreement worth about $90 million.
