FOOD-MICROWAVE SAFETY

OMAHA—Zapping frozen meals in the microwave may be fast and easy, but it also can make you sick. It’s a warning that has been slow to catch on, despite a spate of illnesses last year from improperly microwaved frozen foods. On Sunday, the government issued a new warning urging consumers to thoroughly cook frozen chicken dinners after 32 people in 12 states were sickened with salmonella poisoning. EDUCATION COMMISSIONER

LINCOLN—The hiring of a new education commissioner in Nebraska could smooth key relationships between state education officials, the governor’s office and lawmakers that have been strained in recent years. Gov. Dave Heineman said on Monday that a “new spirit of cooperation” is important now that the state has selected a new education commissioner. Roger Breed, superintendent of Elkhorn Public Schools, was selected last month from four finalists as the new commissioner and will start his new job March 30. By Nate Jenkins.

CHILD SERVICES

LINCOLN—The state of Nebraska is planning to get out of the day-to-day business of providing foster and group homes for thousands of Nebraska children. Instead, Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services is proposing to contract with a few large agencies for the more than 4,300 children who are wards of the state and don’t live with their parents or other custodial relative.

SAFE HAVEN

LINCOLN—Two more children have been left at hospitals under the state’s safe-haven law, bringing to 16 the number of kids abandoned. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said Monday that two 12-year-old boys were left Sunday, one at Omaha’s Immanuel Medical Center and the other at Lincoln’s BryanLGH Medical Center West.

SPORTS:

NEBRASKA-PENALTIES

LINCOLN—First-year Nebraska coach Bo Pelini is telling his players to keep their cool. The Cornhuskers have committed eight personal fouls in five games in addition to the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Pelini against Virginia Tech. That’s the same number of personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called on Nebraska the entire 2007 season. By Sports Writer Eric Olson.
