DENVER—Overnight rain and freezing temperatures combined to coat highways west of Denver with a thin layer of ice, leaving a treacherous commute that left one motorist dead.
A mile of U.S. 6 was closed for about 1 1/2 hours during the Monday morning commute because of ice. Colorado Department of Transportation spokesman Joe Tucker says there were numerous accidents west of Interstate 25 on Interstate 70, C470 and U.S. 285.
Broomfield police say an 84-year-old woman died when she lost control on an icy overpass and slammed into a guard rail Monday morning.
Tucker says the problems began after a storm moved out of the area and temperatures plummeted. CDOT crews tried putting sand on the ice to improve traction.
