DENVER—Prosecutors filed charges against the mother of two children found dead in a parked car outside their home in August.

The Douglas County District Attorney’s office says 28-year-old Stacey Mendieta faces two counts of child abuse resulting in death, charges that carry up to 48 years in prison for each count if she is convicted.

Sheriff’s deputies found the bodies of 5-year-old Jasmine Mendieta and 2-year-old Nathan Mendieta on Aug. 20 in the Castle Pines North neighborhood south of Denver. Deputies were called to the neighborhood on a report that the children were missing.

The coroner says the children died of complications from overheating.

Prosecutors and the Douglas County Sheriff’s office did not release any more details Friday and a court date for Mendieta has not been set.
