Cooler weather and clouds late Monday signaled a change in the weather that could mean heavy winds and even snow by Wednesday.

As cold fronts began passing through Colorado, the low Monday night was expected to be about 42 degrees with a 40 percent chance of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms will increase this afternoon.

Strong, gusty winds from the northwest could kick as high as 60 mph, especially east of Interstate 25. The weather service has issued a high-wind watch for this afternoon through tonight.

The strongest winds are expected east of a line between Fort Collins to near Bennett.

On Wednesday, with a high near 48 degrees, a 10 percent chance of snow is shaping up for Denver, but it’s unlikely to accumulate. Rain will change to snow in the higher country. By Thursday, sunnier skies should return, with a high of about 53 degrees, warming up to the high 60s for Friday and the weekend.
