COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—El Paso County has cut 14 jobs and expects to eliminate about 20 more by the end of the year after voters rejected a sales tax increase.
It’s unclear whether existing employees will lose their jobs, vacant positions will be eliminated, or both.
County officials said Friday the cuts would save $1.4 million next year.
A proposed sales tax increase of one percentage point failed by a 3-to-2 margin on Friday. The increase would have raised $75 million a year, to be shared among county government and El Paso County cities and towns.
County officials say none of the first-round cuts will come from the Sheriff’s Department, the departments of health or human services, or the offices of the district attorney, treasurer, coroner, county clerk, assessor or public trustee.
