MONTROSE, Colo.—A second teenager has been arrested in the stabbing of a 17-year-old girl at Montrose High School.

Police say Mallory Haulman had her throat cut by a 14-year-old boy Tuesday as she entered the school. Her family says she is recovering at home after having surgery.

A 14-year-old boy captured near the school shortly after the attack was arrested. Police are seeking charges of first-degree attempted murder against him.

Montrose Police Chief Tom Chinn says an arrest warrant was served on another 14-year-old boy Thursday. The warrant alleges conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, complicity and accessory to attempted murder.

Chinn said the warrant is “directly related” to the slashing of Mallory’s throat.

The second boy arrested is a student at the school. The other one was set to enroll in an alternative school.

The boys’ names haven’t been released because they’re juveniles. No formal charges have been filed.

Police say it appears Mallory was a random victim. Her family says she doesn’t know the boys.

Denny Haulman, Mallory’s father, said the second boy didn’t physically participate in the attack.

The second boy’s parents told the Daily Press in Montrose that their son knows the other boy but only learned about the attack after it happened.

Mallory’s family says she’ll return to school next week.
