DENVER—Prosecutors have filed first-degree murder and fatal child-abuse charges against a woman and her boyfriend in the scalding death of the woman’s 2-year-old son.

Isela Reyes-Talamantes and John Vigil were arrested Nov. 7, the day Elijah Archuleta died. Formal charges were filed Friday.

The couple told police Elijah accidentally burned himself when he turned on hot water.

Authorities say Reyes-Talamantes gave two accounts of what happened next. In one, she and Vigil ran errands and stopped at a restaurant before taking Elijah to the hospital when he began choking, up to 10 hours after he was burned. In the other, they took the boy to the hospital shortly after he was burned.

They are being held without bail.
