He won’t release any names he has in mind to replace Joe Glenn as Cowboys’ football coach, but the University of Wyoming athletic director said he has a good idea of the type of coach he wants.
Tom Burman said he will not name a short list of candidates, but he is looking for qualities such as leadership and the ability to recruit well.
“We want a winner and we are not going to limit ourselves to a certain level of football,” Burman said Monday. “We are going to look all over the country to find the right fit for the University of Wyoming to help us get over the hump.”
Glenn was fired Sunday after six seasons, a day after the Cowboys finished the season with a loss at home against Colorado State to finish 4-8. The Cowboys haven’t played in a bowl since their 2004 Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl victory over UCLA.
Glenn’s coaching staff have contracts that end on Dec. 31. Burman said it will be up to the new coach to decide if he wants to keep any of them.
“The reality of the situation is that a new coaching staff will be in place as soon as possible,” Burman said. “Those coaches who are interested can meet with the new head coach and if the new coach chooses to keep them, they could be part of the staff moving forward.”
Burman said he would like to have a new coach named as soon as possible but has no set timetable.
“This is a very important decision,” Burman said. “We are not going to rush it and make a mistake. We are not going to let this year’s recruiting class dictate how fast we move. This is a long-term decision.”
Wyoming has four recruits who have orally committed to attend next season.
Many players expressed their support for Glenn following the Colorado State loss.
“I’m sure they are down in the dumps,” Burman said. “Coach Glenn did a great job mentoring these young kids. I know these guys want to win, and they are competitors. They are hopeful that we get this thing fixed and get them over the hump to send them off with championship rings.”
