MONTROSE, Colo.—A 14-year-old boy will face adult charges in this month’s knife attack at Montrose High School.

Michael Yates was charged Monday with attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.

Authorities say he walked into the school on Nov. 11 and cut the throat of 17-year-old Mallory Haulman as she entered the building. Haulman required surgery but has since returned to class.

Yates was arrested near the scene shortly after the attack.

Authorities say Yates and another 14-year-old boy are being held at Grand Mesa Youth Services in Grand Junction.

The other boy faces conspiracy and other charges in the attack. His name has not been released.

Yates is due back in court Wednesday.
