A 10-year-old girl was pedaling in the bicycle lane when she was hit by a sport-utility vehicle this afternoon in south Fort Collins, suffering serious injuries, police said tonight.
The child was rushed to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland then transferred to The Children’s Hospital in Aurora.
She was riding her bike near her home along Avondale Road near Ramah Drive, when a Ford Expedition driven by Michelle Smith, 36, of Fort Collins drifted into the bike lane and hit the child head-on, police said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police think Smith was distracted, and that neither alcohol or drugs were factors, according to a statement Tuesday night.
Any witnesses who have not already spoken to police can call 970-221-6540.
