AURORA, Colo.—Sergio Salazar made up for a missed extra point in regulation by making one in overtime, giving Olathe a 22-21 win Saturday over Erie for the Class 2A state football title.
Senior running back David Rhodes finished with 223 yards on 22 carries and three touchdowns for Olathe (14-0) as it won its first state football title. His 57-yard rumble up the middle with 5:40 to play in regulation tied the game, 15-15, but Salazar missed the extra point.
Erie (12-2) was driving to avoid overtime, but Ryan Hawkins fumbled and the Pirates’ Garhett Jurgens recovered with 52.3 seconds to play. A 36-yard run by Rhodes put Salazar in position to kick the winning field goal, but Stephen Boyd blocked the 41-yard attempt as time expired.
Alex Ortega scored first in overtime for Erie, but Hawkins’ extra-point attempt hit the left upright.
Rhodes scored on a 3-yard TD run, and Salazar kicked the extra point for the win.
