WASHINGTON — Alaska’s incoming senator says his convicted predecessor, Sen. Ted Stevens, shouldn’t be sent to jail.
Sen.-elect Mark Begich says he and fellow Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski are part of a generational shift. Democrat Begich, 46, defeated Stevens, 85, while Murkowski, a 51-year-old Republican, replaced her father, Frank, six years ago. Frank Murkowski served 22 years as Alaska senator, while Stevens served 40 years in the Senate.
Begich, elected in large part because of Stevens’ trial and conviction on corruption charges, said Stevens doesn’t need to be imprisoned. “There are other utilizations for prison space,” he said.
