GOLDEN, Colo.—A 20-year-old man from Arvada has been charged with killing a dog with a bow and arrow while he was house-sitting for the dog’s owners.

Zackary Scott Ruszka is charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, and underage possession and use of alcohol. He appeared in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Ruszka lived with his girlfriend and her family, who had left him in charge of their home and dog when they went to California for a family emergency.

While they were gone, Ruszka is accused of kicking the small black terrier named Blaze and then shooting the dog with two arrows. Another roommate called police.

If found guilty, Ruszka could be sentenced to between one and three years in prison.
