CORTEZ, Colo.—A Cortez man is scheduled to be sentenced in February after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend.

Prosecutors said Wednesday that the plea agreement with 48-year-old George Michael Mirabal caps his prison sentence at 36 years, though sentences for second-degree murder can range from 16 to 48 years.

Mirabal pleaded guilty Friday in the April strangulation death of 46-year-old Lucille S. Gray, a paraprofessional at Cortez Middle School. She was found dead inside her home April 12.

Mirabal is in custody at the Montezuma County Detention Center in Cortez.

A judge set sentencing for Feb. 4.
