GALLUP, N.M. — City councilors have gone one
They passed an ordinance Tuesday night that bans any activity that prevents drivers from devoting their full attention to the safe operation of their vehicle. That includes talking on a cellphone, texting, drinking, eating, shaving, putting on makeup, combing hair and changing clothes.
Under the ordinance, a citation can be issued to any driver who commits the offense of driving while distracted when that activity contributes to an accident that involves property damage greater than $1,000 or results in serious bodily injury to another driver.
