Billy Edwin Reid was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences Thursday for the murders to two women in Jefferson County in the late 1980s.

The bodies of 28-year-old Lanell Williams and 33-year-old Lisa Kelly were found in the foothills of unincorporated Jefferson County 1989.

Williams, who had been raped, beaten and strangled, was found in Clear Creek Canyon by two Colorado School of Mines students panning for gold in October 1989.

Five months earlier, Kelly’s then-unidentifiable, decomposed remains were found near Beaver Brook Trailhead on Lookout Mountain. She was buried as a Jane Doe until cold-case investigators identified her in 2005.

Reid was arrested in May 2006, while in jail on unrelated charges.

He was sentenced to 48 years to be served concurrently with his life sentences for the rape of Williams.

Investigator Cheryl Moore with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Cold Case Unit was “tenacious in this case,” District Attorney Scott Storey said in a statement. “It is because of her hard work that we finally have closure today for these families.
