IGNACIO, Colo.—Matthew Box has been sworn in as the new Southern Ute tribal chairman after winning a runoff election.

Box defeated Howard Richards with 66 percent of the vote Friday after neither candidate gained a majority of the vote in November. The final vote tally was 227 to 115 for Box.

Box was sworn in Monday at the tribe’s new casino and hotel. He replaces Clement Frost, who served for decades on the council.

Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Vice Chairman Gary Hayes says Box’s election is the beginning of a new era.

Also sworn in Monday to a Tribal Council seat was Alex Cloud. He won a runoff election against Ray Frost.
