Denver and Aurora police officers were involved in related-but-separate traffic accidents minutes apart at the same intersection Thursday night.

An off-duty Aurora police officer was a hit-and-run victim at Dunkirk Street and East 56th Avenue at 8:37 p.m. He followed the driver and pulled him over a short distance away at Genoa Street.

Dunkirk is the border between Denver and Aurora police jurisdictions.

Denver police rushed to the officer’s aid, and one officer crashed at the site of the original collision, said Lt. Ron Saunier, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department.

The Aurora officer was uninjured. The Denver officer was hurt, but he did not appear to have serious or life-threatening injuries, Denver and Aurora sources said.

The three people in the car hit by the officer were not hurt, said Saunier, who wasn’t sure who was at fault.

The driver accused in the original accident was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Saunier said.
