STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.—The Yampa Valley Electric Association plans to absorb a rate increase from its own power provider instead of raising rates for its customers next year.

The cooperative’s president and general manager, Larry Covillo, says the board voted to absorb the $1.28 million increase from Xcel Energy to help its own consumers in this “unsettled economic environment.”

Covillo says that with the economy not doing so well, YVEA will do its best to absorb the rate increases. He says the cooperative is very frugal.

He’s not expecting service to be affected.

YVEA serves about 26,000 consumers.
