COLORADO SPRINGS — A Colorado Springs police officer is OK but his police dog was injured in a rollover crash Friday night.

The accident happened when 52-year-old Michael Riggs of Colorado Springs slammed into a police sport utility vehicle driven by Officer Brent Ambuel, a six-year veteran.

Both drivers were injured but treated and released. Also hurt in the crash was Ambuel’s K9 partner, Hunter, who suffered internal injuries.

Hunter was kept at a veterinarian’s office overnight for observation and released Saturday afternoon.

“He’s got bruised lungs and he’ll be out of service for two weeks, but other than that, he’ll be just OK,” Colorado Springs police Sgt. Larry Morgan told The Gazette.

The crash happened about 7 p.m. Friday when Briggs, driving a 1999 Saturn sedan, failed to yield and slammed into Ambuel’s SUV, flipping it, police said.

Ambuel was responding to an emergency with his lights and sirens on.

Riggs was cited for careless driving and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
