A retired firefighter who pushed his granddaughter to safety just before he was hit by a truck has begun an intensive rehabilitation program.

Lewin was pushing his granddaughter in a stroller in a crosswalk the night he was hit. He shoved the stroller so hard to get it out of harm’s way that the rubber grip was ripped from the handle.

His 3-month-old granddaughter was not hurt. The pickup driver was charged with careless driving causing injury.

Lewin, who suffered severe head injuries, was transferred Monday night from Swedish Medical Center to Craig Hospital, according to Kenny Hosack, a Craig spokesman.
