WASHINGTON—The Senate has adjourned for the year at last. But a new Senate will be back on Tuesday.

It took Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., all of 27 seconds on Friday to bring an end to the Senate for the 110th Congress. The House is set to adjourn on Saturday.

That means farewell to a two-year session that was dominated by the presidential race and the collapse of the economy.

It also means farewell to several senators. Barack Obama of Illinois is headed to the White House with his vice president-elect, Joe Biden of Delaware.

Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York is set to become secretary of state and Ken Salazar of Colorado will be the interior secretary.

The new Congress convenes on Tuesday.
