A fire caused serious damage this morning to a home in the Green Mountain area of Lakewood, according to the West Metro Fire Protection District.
Micki Trost, district spokeswoman, said the resident of the house in the 12200 block of West Mississippi Avenue was not home at the time of the fire.
A neighbor called the fire department after seeing flames.
Smoke from the fire was visible throughout Lakewood. Flames were shooting from windows of the house when firefighters arrived about 10:58 a.m.
“A cat was found in the basement of the home and was taken to a veterinarian down the street and is doing fine,” said Trost. Firefighters gave the cat oxygen at the scene before it was taken to the vet.
The fire was in the walls and attic of the home, and caused “significant damage,” to the main floor, said Trost. It was out by 11:20 a.m.
A ladder truck, two engines, two medic units and a chief responded with more than 20 firefighters fighting the blaze.
