The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was born Jan. 15, 1929, and assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn. Federal, state and city celebrations are held in January in his honor. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Jan. 19 this year.

Denver: The 20th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award will be celebrated from 6 to 9 p.m. at Boettcher Concert Hall in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. There will be a community reception and a Colorado Symphony Orchestra and awards presentation. Tickets are available at Denver Central Library, 10 W. 14th Avenue Parkway, Level One, at the Information Desk.

Colorado Springs: The Martin Luther King Jr. Closing Celebration is a free, annual event that includes presentations of awards to local high school students, musical selections from community choirs and refreshments provided by Delta Sigma Theta sorority at 4 p.m. at Colorado College, Shove Memorial Chapel, 1010 N. Nevada Ave. This year’s service features an address by former Colorado Lt. Gov. Joe Rogers. The celebration is preceded by a march from Acacia Park, beginning at 3:45 p.m. For information, call 719-389-6607.

Colorado Springs: A Celebration for MLK Day — a free concert featuring gospel music by the Rev. Dennis Mose and Friends, readings of King’s speeches and open-microphone time to reflect on King’s contributions and impact — will be at 12:30 p.m. at Colorado College, Worner Campus Center, 902 N. Denver: A Marade will start at 10:45 a.m. from the “I Have a Dream” statue of King in City Park. It will proceed south out of the park on Esplanade to East Colfax Avenue, then west on Colfax to Sherman Street into the state Capitol grounds, and then across Broadway to Civic Center park. Motorized vehicles will proceed south on Broadway to 14th Avenue. The total distance is 5K. A salute to King immediately follows the Marade at Civic Center’s Greek Theater.
Denver: Kaiser Permanente is hosting an MLK Day Health Fair from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Manual High School, 1700 E. 28th Ave. Services include wellness exams for children, PAP tests for women, pediatric-vision screenings, pediatric-hearing tests, immunizations for children, mammograms for women, and blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes screenings.
Grand Junction: The Mesa State College AmeriCorps project and the Cultural Diversity Board are hosting a free community celebration of the life of Martin Luther King Jr. A remembrance march with luminaries will be at 5 p.m. in the Academic Quad, just west of the Moss Performing Arts Center. A celebration will be from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Mesa Experimental Theater in the Moss Performing Arts Center. Refreshments will be provided.
