All of those young offensive linemen on the Colorado roster will have to adjust to a new position coach.
Jeff Grimes, who recently completed his second season as CU’s assistant head coach and offensive line coach, was named Sunday as offensive line coach at Auburn. He will serve under new Tigers head coach Gene Chizik, formerly at Iowa State.
Grimes, 40, was among the most highly regarded of Dan Hawkins’ assistants, having been given the additional title of assistant head coach after he joined the CU program in February 2007 after three seasons at Brigham Young. Other stops included Arizona State (2001-03) and Boise State (2000).
“As coaches, we are competitive and love challenges, and I’m looking forward to coaching with, and against, some of the best players in the country,” Grimes said on the Auburn website.
Among CU assistants, Grimes was the only native of Texas — a recruiting hotbed that is being emphasized by Colorado’s staff. Grimes became only the second assistant to leave the Buffaloes in Hawkins’ three years. The other, 2006 offensive line coach Chris Strausser, returned to Boise State and was replaced by Grimes.
“Jeff is a good man, friend and coach,” Hawkins said of Grimes in a CU released statement. “We wish him and his family the best.”
