Rocky Mountain News staffers are organizing a candlelight march on Jan. 29 to show support for the newspaper.
Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co., which owns the paper, said last month it would try to sell the paper through mid-January, at which time it would explore its options, which include closing the newspaper.
Bids for the paper were accepted through Jan. 16; Scripps has not disclosed the results.
Many newspaper analysts have said that the chances of selling the News are slim.
Rocky staffers started shortly after the sale was announced. The website says its purpose is to “preserve and protect the editorial voice of the Rocky” and fight for their jobs.
The web site announced the march on Monday. It starts at the Denver Press Club, 1330 Glenarm Place, next Thursday at 6 p.m. “Readers and writers, labor and management, Post and News and DNA, public officials and private citizens” are invited to participate, the posting says. The march will end at the Denver Newspaper Building, 101 West Colfax Ave.
Organizers hope to have 150 marchers, each holding “a candle and placard representing one year of the newspaper’s 150-year history.”
