GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The death of a Rifle man in a seven-vehicle crash in western Colorado has been ruled an accident.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office says 43-year-old Efrain Holguin-Cervantes was a passenger in a Dodge Ram that hit a barrier along Interstate 70 near Palisade about 7 p.m. Tuesday. He then stepped out of the pickup and was struck by an oncoming Kia sedan.

Three more crashes stemming from the first two collisions occurred shortly thereafter.

Holguin-Cervantes died at the scene of multiple injuries. The pickup driver, 50-year-old Enrique Simental of Espanola, N.M., was cited for careless driving causing bodily injury and failure to provide proof of insurance.

Simental was not hurt, but two other people were taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.
