WASHINGTON—Marion Stearns White, the widow of Supreme Court Justice Byron White, has died at 87, the court announced Friday.
White died on Wednesday in Denver.
She was born in Denver in 1921, the daughter of former University of Colorado president Robert Stearns. Her future husband was a star football player at the university.
She graduated from Vassar College and attended the University of Denver School of Social Work.
Both Whites served in the Navy in World War II. She was a decoder and a recruiter.
The Whites were married in 1946. They moved to Washington, D.C., in 1960 when President John F. Kennedy appointed Byron White deputy attorney general.
Kennedy appointed him to the Supreme Court in 1962, and he served for 31 years. He died in 2002.
Survivors include two children, Charles Byron “Barney” White and Nancy White Lippe, and six grandchildren.
Services will be Feb. 2 at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral in Denver.
