Boulder police are investigating the slaying of a man found shot Friday night in a residential neighborhood, authorities said.

William Dwayne Andrews, 47, of Boulder was shot twice in the chest and once in the face at close range, police said. Police were alerted about 8 p.m. to the shooting in the 1200 block of Sumac Avenue.

Neighbors heard three gunshots and saw a newer-model four-door beige sedan speeding from the scene.

The car backed out of a driveway directly across from where the victim was found, headed west on Sumac Avenue and then turned south onto Broadway.

When police arrived, Andrews was dead, lying in the road with three spent shell casings nearby.

Boulder police Chief Mark Beckner said Saturday that investigators impounded a car believed to be connected to the shooting. Police also identified people they think were involved in the crime. No one has been charged.

“We have a lot of interviews to do. Detectives are out talking to people,” Boulder police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said Saturday.

Police said the crime did not appear random and that Andrews likely knew his killer. They don’t believe Andrews had any connection to the neighborhood where he was found.

“While we are taking this crime incredibly seriously, we do not have any reason to believe the neighborhood or this community is at continued risk,” Beckner said.

Longmont police Cmdr. Tim Lewis said Saturday that Boulder police were investigating whether the shooting was linked to a fight in Longmont in which a man held a shotgun to a woman’s head at her motor home and fired a round into the air before leaving with another man.

Longmont police arrested Joseph Abeyta, 41, on Saturday in that case. He was being held on a $100,000 bond on suspicion of first-degree burglary and felony menacing.

Huntley would not comment on a possible connection with the Boulder case.
