BOULDER, Colo.—Boulder Mayor Shaun McGrath is resigning to take a job in the Obama administration.
McGrath will serve as deputy director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, where he’ll be responsible for working with the nation’s 50 governors on a variety of policies, the Daily Camera reported Wednesday.
“Right now, the office is very engaged in the stimulus package, and my guess is that’s going to be case even after it’s passed,” he said. “There’s a wide range of issues that have implications for the states and local governments—everything from homeland security to health care.”
McGrath currently serves as program director for the Western Governors Association, a nonprofit group that represents governors in 19 states.
He said he applied for the administration post and has been in discussions with President Barack Obama’s transition team for several weeks.
He’ll resign his seat as Boulder’s mayor at the close of Tuesday night’s meeting.
McGrath said he and his wife, Becca Heaton, will be moving to Washington, D.C., but will keep their home in Boulder.
Obama said in a statement Wednesday that it’s a priority for his administration to make sure the government is open and honest and that the doors of the White House are open to all citizens. He said McGrath and other appointees “will work to ensure that our administration is working closely with state and local officials elected by the American people.”
