Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Denver has moved its Gift of Mary Homeless Shelter for women to an old school building on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput blessed the new shelter Monday.

“The sisters were looking for a poorer area to work,” said St. Joseph Pastor Jorge de Los Santos. “Until now, they’ve been in Capitol Hill. ‘It’s not poor anymore,’ they told me.”

Since St. Joseph’s Catholic School closed in 1993, the building has been used for religious classes. The archdiocese donated more than $300,000 for renovations to accommodate the women’s shelter.
