LAFAYETTE — Hundreds of people attended a memorial for a man killed after being struck by a car while he walked on the side of a highway.

Louisville resident John Breaux had become well-known in the community for his efforts to try to keep the city clean by picking up litter on the streets. The 57-year-old died Friday after being struck by a vehicle that swerved off the road on U.S. 287 in Lafayette. Police say 62-year-old Mary Jo Anne Thomas faces charges of vehicular homicide in connection to the accident and driving under the influence of drugs.

People attending the memorial Saturday night at an Albertsons grocery store called Breaux an “angel on earth.”

Those who knew him say he would often ride his bike to pick up trash.
