French skipper Michel Desjoyeaux won his second Vendee Globe solo around-the-world yacht race in record time after more than 80 days battling rough seas and high winds. Desjoyeaux steered his yacht into port on the west coast of France to finish in 84 days, 3 hours, 9 minutes, and 8 seconds. Grueling conditions forced more than half of the 30-strong field to abandon the event, which began in early November, and sailed around the southernmost tips of Africa, Australia and the Americas.
