A nonprofit overseeing the proposed renovation of Denver Union Station will get $1.5 million from the city’s contingency fund to put it in line to receive federal stimulus money, under a plan that moved forward Wednesday.

The finance committee of the Denver City Council gave its blessing to the plan, which now goes to the full City Council for consideration.

The contingency fund had $18.1 million at the beginning of 2009. The money is needed to make sure the nonprofit, known as the Denver Union Station Project Authority, is up and running to qualify for the federal funds, said Claude Pumilia, the city’s finance director.

Pumilia told the council he is more than 90 percent certain the city will recoup the $1.5 million.
