DALLAS — The Stars placed controversial left wing Sean Avery on waivers Saturday, moving him one step closer toward a possible return to the NHL.
A person with firsthand knowledge of the situation said Avery has completed a counseling program and was placed on Dallas’ active roster. The Stars then placed Avery on waivers.
Avery must clear waivers by Monday. A team could claim him before then, but would have to pay the remainder of the four-year, $15.5 million contract he signed last summer.
The New York Post has reported that the Rangers have had discussions about the possibility of bringing back Avery, who formerly played with the team.

DETROIT — Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom will miss up to five weeks because of hernia surgery, but should be healthy for the playoffs.
Footnotes.
Blues goaltender Manny Legace cleared waivers and will be sent to the team’s minor-league affiliate in Peoria. Goalie Chris Holt was recalled from Peoria to be Chris Mason’s backup.
