FLORENCE, Colo.—A man who died after commandeering a trash truck and leading authorities on a 31-mile chase this weekend had escaped from a halfway house.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that Philip Munos, 29, had walked away from a halfway house in Colorado Springs, where he took his girlfriend’s vehicle and drove to Pueblo. The chase began after officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a store there early Saturday, District Attorney Thom LeDoux said.

The suspect somehow took control of a trash truck and drove westbound on U.S. 50 into Florence, LeDoux said. The chase ended after the suspect drove into a car wash building.

LeDoux said stun guns were used to try to subdue the suspect, who developed medical issues shortly after he was taken into custody and died at a hospital in Canon City.

Preliminary autopsy results suggested the cause of death may be due in part to high levels of cocaine.
