Melanie Shirilla of Lincoln, Mont., completed the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race on Saturday with an overall time of 23 hours, 8 minutes and 8 seconds, winning the largest mushers’ race south of Alaska.
This was the fourth time Shirilla won the race, which took place over eight days and traversed through 10 towns in Wyoming before finishing in Park City, Utah. The 300-mile-plus race began on Jan. 30 in Jackson, Wyo.
Krista Halsnes, a 15-year-old freshman at Steamboat Springs High School, made a late surge to finish 13th with a time of 26:02:11. She won the sixth stage on Thursday, and finished second twice, in the seventh stage Friday and Saturday’s eighth stage.
Wendy Davis of Lander, Wyo., was second overall with a time of 24:14:05. Canadian Sam Perrino was third (24:22:42).
Rage falls to RiverKings.
The Rocky Mountain Rage, in the middle of a seven-game road trip, fell 5-1 to the Mississippi RiverKings on Sunday in Southaven, Miss. The Rage (24-20-4) is 2-3-0 on its current trip. The team’s 52 points trail the Northwest Division-leading Colorado Eagles (72) in the Central Hockey League.
Stephen Margeson led Mississippi (29-14-2) with two goals. Simon Watson scored for Rocky Mountain to extend his points streak to seven games. He has seven goals and four assists in that span.
14ers get past Bakersfield.
Dominique Coleman scored 25 points and Billy Thomas added 24 to lead the Colorado 14ers to a 110-105 win over the host Bakersfield Jam in an NBA Development League game.
Josh Davis scored 17 points and grabbed a game- high 11 rebounds for Colorado (18-7), which remained tied atop the Southwest Division with the Austin Toros (19-8).
The 14ers led by as many as 15 points and trailed by as many as nine. But they pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Bakersfield 31-23 in the frame.
