DENVER—School districts would have to post detailed lists of their monthly spending online under a measure given initial backing by the full Senate on Friday.

Some school districts were worried that it might take a while to come up with a way to compile and present the information. Senators agreed to give them until September 2011 to start posting the reports.

A committee had previously weakened the measure to only encourage school districts to post the information. After some debate, senators agreed to make it mandatory but gave schools more flexibility.

The bill no longer requires districts to post the information in a searchable database.

The bill must past another vote before it can move to the House.
