BOULDER, Colo.—A group of students who wanted to change the name of Boulder High School to Barack Obama High School has backed off amid fierce opposition from other students.

Ben Raderstorf, president of a group called Student Worker, said Thursday they’d had made a “gross error” in underestimating the popularity of the old name.

Student body President Devin Kuh says classmates appreciate Obama’s accomplishments but felt changing the name would diminish the school’s long history.

Raderstorf says Student Worker wants to shake its reputation for being stubborn and controversial.

Member Meagan Mahaffy says their next project may be trying to get the school to start composting.
