After a successful training session today in Val d’Isere, France, Lindsey Vonn decided she can compete in Saturday’s slalom at the world alpine championships.
Vonn cut her thumb on a broken champagne bottle Monday after winning her second gold medal of the championships, severing a tendon. Surgery repaired the tendon Tuesday, and she skied with braces protecting the thumb Thursday and today.
“Lindsey took three or four runs this morning and everything felt good,” women’s U.S. Ski Team head coach Jim Tracy said today. “They made some slight adjustments to help her grip her pole a bit better, but she’s ready to go.”
Vonn has won two World Cup slaloms this season and is second in the World Cup slalom standings. If she claims a medal Saturday, she will have sole possession of the record for most career world championships medals by an American woman (five) and will tie Bode Miller for the U.S. record for either gender. Currently she is tied with Tamara McKinney.
