BOULDER, Colo.—In his days on Saturday Night Live, Chevy Chase was known for lampooning President Gerald Ford, but he says he doesn’t think such parodies affect the outcomes of elections.
“Anybody can reach anywhere from five to 15 million people weekly, making a president look like an idiot as I did back then or Tina Fey did with Sarah Palin. … You’re always preaching to the choir one way or the other,” he said.
Chase was in Boulder to accept an award of excellence in comedy at the Boulder International Film Festival.
“I’m very flattered,” he said. “Were other people nominated?”
Chase said not much in comedy has changed over the years.
“What’s funny is funny,” he said. “The same thing that made you laugh a hundred years ago makes you laugh now.”
